Liverpool will pursue Levi Colwill in the summer

Liverpool will likely pursue a deal for Levi Colwill in the summer, but Chelsea will make it a complicated affair to sell the 20-year-old.

Fraser Gillan insists Liverpool might pursue a deal for top defensive target Levi Colwill in the summer, with the 20-year-old Chelsea ace at the top of their shortlist. The Blues will complicate things for Jurgen Klopp’s side in this pursuit as they are firmly in control of the defender’s future.

Liverpool to pursue Levi Colwill in the summer

Back in the summer window, there was a tiny chance for Levi Colwill to depart, with Brighton pushing hard to sign the defender. The Seagulls were hoping to lure the 20-year-old Chelsea ace as part of the deal to sell Moises Caicedo.

Instead, Chelsea paid a record sum for Caicedo and kept hold of Colwill, with the 20-year-old signing a new contract back in August. The new deal ties the defender until 2029 with the option of another season, meaning suitors will stand no chance of signing him.

Yet, there were suggestions that Liverpool had an interest this month, considering they might have also explored a move in the summer. Colwill has become a mainstay under Mauricio Pochettino, but Jorgen Klopp genuinely rates the England international. The Reds might pursue a deal in the summer, as per Fraser Gillan, which would make sense, considering they need a left-sided centre-back option in their squad.

Chelsea are uninterested in a sale now, nor will they make things easy for any suitor, particularly Liverpool, if they choose to pursue a deal. The defender is considered a major star of the future at Stamford Bridge, and despite claims that Chelsea could sell him, among others, for financial gains, a departure will not sit well among fans.

Could Levi Colwill leave Chelsea?

Under the new ownership at Stamford Bridge, no player has a certain future, with the club creating a competitive environment designed to keep players on their toes at all times. Stars such as Reece James, Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah, Colwill could depart for the right price.

Chelsea are already on the edge of FFP troubles, which has seen the club keen on selling some homegrown stars. Alongside probably James, Colwill is one of their prized assets, although it will take a mammoth bid for the Blues to consider.

Their strategy of a long term contract may pay dividends, as Liverpool will have to come up with a massive offer even to turn Chelsea heads. As for the player, he appears happy at Stamford Bridge, which could pose a different problem for the Merseysiders in the hunt for the 20-year-old Chelsea ace.
