Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are reportedly discussing a move for Conor Gallagher despite earlier suggestions stating otherwise.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham are in talks with Chelsea to sign Conor Gallagher. In the last few weeks, speculation began mounting around the England international, with the Blues now likely to part ways to make a profit over another homegrown star.
Tottenham in talks to sign Gallagher.
Late in the summer window, Tottenham may or may not have attempted to sign Conor Gallagher, as reports had a conflicting tone to it. Either way, Spurs held an interest, but the 23-year-old midfielder wanted to prove his worth at Stamford Bridge, and he has done so in a big way so far this season.
He has been better than big signings Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, as he even captained Chelsea on a few occasions this season. Mauricio Pochettino remains opposed to a sale but had admitted earlier that things were not in his hands and it would be a ‘club decision’ if the midfielder left.
A few clubs have already seen links, but it appears that Tottenham are ready to steal the march to sign the 23-year-old midfielder if he departs Stamford Bridge. Spurs are keen on adding players in the central positions, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s situation now understandably delicate at the club.
Spurs have now opened talks with Chelsea over a possible move as they hope for a deal to materialise. Whether Gallagher is open to the move remains to be seen, but if the club decides to sell him, he may have no choice left on his hands.
Why are Chelsea selling Gallagher?
Chelsea are keen on continuing their transfer market activity and do not want FFP to slow them down. As per multiple suggestions, there are concerns with FFP, which might lead them to sell homegrown stars. They have already allowed a few such departures, including Lewis Hall and Mason Mount, while Trevoh Chalobah, Ian Maatsen, and now Gallagher are probably the next ones to leave.
A report suggested Chelsea want £50 million for Gallagher, which in this market would make so much sense considering the 23-year-old’s current status. Whether Tottenham are prepared to pay that big remains the question, but they will undoubtedly jump at the opportunity.
Another story insisted Chelsea would not sell Gallagher to Spurs, but that stance may have changed. The 23-year-old midfielder’s sale would allow Chelsea to move room to make new signings in January, as they have a few requirements, notably a striker. For now, they are well-stacked in the midfield department, and if they had to let go of any player, Gallagher was probably first on that list.
