Arsenal are ready to find out the possibility of signing Arthur Vermeeren as Mikel Arteta remains interested in the teenage midfielder.

According to Give Me Sport, Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing Arthur Vermeeren in January. The Gunners are eager to strengthen some key positions of the squad. However, central midfield remains a priority for Mikel Arteta, who has been alerted to the possible availability of the Belgian international.

Arthur Vermeeren in high demand

Arthur Vermeeren has had a productive 18 months with Royal Antwerp, where he helped the team win the league title. He has been called up to the Belgian squad since and could become a regular ahead of Euro 2024.

Hence, there’s a lot of emphasis placed on a significant transfer away from Royal Antwerp, as the 18-year-old Barcelona target could move as soon as January. The Catalans have held an interest since the two teams played in the Champions League this season.

Following some mature performances from the teenagers, more clubs have joined the race, including Manchester United, who are willing to pay a decent fee. There are others like Liverpool enquiring, while Tottenham could also ponder a move.

Spurs are reportedly open to paying big money and allowing Royal Antwerp to keep Vermeeren until June to aid his development. Now, Arsenal have joined the hunt, with Mikel Arteta a keen admirer of the 18-year-old’s talents and performances.

Arsenal keen on a midfielder.

Arsenal have many needs in the transfer market, with multiple reports pointing towards a new defender’s arrival in January. Arteta also remains concerned about his midfield, which has seen plenty of injuries since the season began.

Thomas Partey’s prolonged absence has been vital to Arteta’s thinking about signing a new midfielder. They held an interest in Douglas Luiz and Joao Palhinha, but neither might fit their budget for January. Hence, there is a likelihood of targeting someone like Vermeeren, who also fits their plans for the future.

There were suggestions Arsenal had shelved their chase of Vermeeren, but it appears they are back in it. Arteta would like the midfielder to come in and provide some extra steel in that midfield, as the Gunners want to stay ready for the title challenge this season.
