Chelsea need an Enzo Fernandez-like deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Chelsea will need an Enzo Fernandez-like deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres, whose release clause is worth €100 million, from Sporting CP.

According to Ben Jacobs on Give Me Sport, Chelsea might need to go the Enzo Fernandez way to land Viktor Gyokeres in the January transfer window. So, the move might be “expensive, dramatic and potentially a negotiation that could drag on”. Meanwhile, the Blues need to trigger his release clause, worth €100 million, to secure his services.

The Rise of Viktor Gyokeres at Sporting CP

Viktor Gyokeres has been one of the surprise packages of the season since joining Sporting CP from Coventry City. The Swedish international was always a prolific customer in the final third for the EFL Championship outfit. But very few would have envisioned the exploits to improve in Portugal with Sporting CP.

The 25-year-old has contributed to 25 goals in just 20 appearances this season, finding the back of the net 17 times while providing eight assists. Gyokeres’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs, including Chelsea. But Sporting CP will point to his release clause, worth €100 million, to part ways with him.

Chelsea Keen on Gyokeres

Chelsea can do with a striker in the January transfer window after struggling to score goals thus far this season. Nicolas Jackson is the West London club’s first-choice striker. But he has yet to perform consistently since arriving from Villarreal, with the match-winning hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur being an anomaly.

Meanwhile, Armando Broja has struggled to establish a foothold in the Chelsea first team since recovering from a long-term injury layoff. So, it behoves Chelsea to scour the market for a striker heading into the January transfer window as they look to resurrect their stuttering campaign. Viktor Gyokeres has thus emerged as a viable target for Chelsea.

But the Swedish international will not come cheap, with Sporting CP pointing to his release clause of €100 million. The Portuguese giants are open to recouping more if his suitors want to structure the deal another way. But Ben Jacobs has suggested that an Enzo Fernandez-like deal, which will be “expensive, dramatic and potentially a negotiation that could drag on”, could ensue.

Reports have claimed that Chelsea will happily trigger Gyokeres’s release clause to land him. But unlike Enzo Fernandez, the 25-year-old will not actively push for a January move, especially with Sporting CP leading the title race. So, a winter move might not be on the cards.
