Arsenal are reportedly keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund’s German centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck ahead of the January transfer window.

According to Fichajes, Arsenal are looking for a new left-sided centre-back and could target Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential option. The 24-year-old centre-back has been a solid presence for Borussia Dortmund since arriving from SC Freiburg, and they could demand a significant fee for his sale.

Is Nico Schlotterbeck the next left-sided option for Arsenal?

Nico Schlotterbeck made a name for himself in the Bundesliga at a relatively young age, first with SC Freiburg and then after his big move to Borussia Dortmund. He has had his ups and downs, but there is enough recognition from various German managers in recent years, as he has a big path ahead to shine.

There were a few clubs interested in him during his time at Freiburg. But now, Arsenal’s potential interest could bring a different appeal. It may seem like a massive opportunity to join some of his compatriots in the Premier League.

Arsenal already have Kai Havertz in their ranks, which could help in some regards. However, the Gunners might have entered the race following recent reports about finding a new left-footed centre-back to join their ranks.

Links to Goncalo Inacio explain their search to an extent, as Arsenal plot a loan-to-buy offer to sign the Portuguese centre-back from Sporting CP. There are subsequent rumours about selling Jakub Kiwior amid AC Milan’s interest, which may explain a lot.

Another report had earlier stated they might trigger Inacio’s clause, which tends to show they might have the budget to sign a top-rated centre-back.

Why do Arsenal need a left-sided centre-back?

The Gunners have suffered from persistent injuries to their defender since the season began. After their summer business, it appeared Jurrien Timber might have played there until the injury to his knee ended his season.

Meanwhile, Takehiro Tomiyasu has also suffered a fresh problem, which has seen him miss the last month of football. Hence, Mikel Arteta might think about adding someone on the left side of the defence to enhance the options.

It could spell the end for Kiwior, who has been decent but not someone Arteta might trust weekly. A player like Nico Schlotterbeck can enhance the position and provide solid cover for Gabriel Magalhaes while also making himself available to play left-back if needed.
