Barcelona establish contact with Amadou Onana

La Liga champions Barcelona have reportedly contacted the entourage of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, valued at €50 million.

According to a report by MARCA, as relayed by Sport Witness, Amadou Onana is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions have established contact to sign the Everton midfielder. The Premier League club will demand €50 million to part ways with the Belgian international.

Amadou Onana at Everton: The Story So Far

Amadou Onana joined Everton from LOSC Lille last year in a deal worth around €35 million. Since then, the 22-year-old has been among the best performers for the Merseyside club while establishing himself as one of the best young prospects in the Premier League.

The Belgian international has turned out over 50 times for Everton, chipping in with three goals and three assists. Meanwhile, Onana’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with many high-profile clubs setting their sights on him. A move to La Liga might be on the cards, with Barcelona recently joining the race to sign him.

Barcelona Keen on Onana

Barcelona will head into the 2024 summer transfer window scouring the market for a holding midfielder. The Blaugrana signed Oriol Romeu to fill Sergio Busquets’s shoes this past summer. But the experienced Spanish midfielder is on the wrong side of 30, meaning he will be a short-term option for Barcelona.

In addition, Romeu has struggled to make his mark in the first half of the 2023/24 season. So, Barcelona might offload the former Southampton midfielder in the 2024 summer transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions thus need to invest in a young holding midfielder ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Several candidates, including Kalvin Phillips, have emerged on Barcelona’s radar. But Amadou Onana is also a viable target for the Blaugrana. And the Catalan giants have established contact to sign the Everton midfielder. Meanwhile, the Premier League club will demand around €50 million to part ways with the 22-year-old.

That might put a spanner in the works for Barcelona, considering the never-ending financial mess. So, it will be interesting to see if the reigning La Liga champions can afford to pay €50 million to sign the Belgian international from Everton next summer or if they negotiate a lower transfer fee.
