Italian outlet La Stampa pointed towards the growing interest in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in January and how Ange Postecoglou can still block a move. The 28-year-old has not played much for his liking so he might look for a new challenge, but there are complications ahead of next month.
Ange Postecoglou has made it abundantly clear who he prefers to start in his midfield setup. Since the Australian’s arrival, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has lost his place to one of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, with the dup now the preferred pairing at Tottenham.
Postecoglou has undoubtedly justified his selections with some stellar performances from the duo, while Hojbjerg has come to fill in when needed. The midfielder remains an unhappy figure in north London, with him and the club reportedly open to parting ways back in the summer.
Tottenham’s asking price played a problem, which might remain when the January window opens. Spurs do not want a loan deal for the 28-year-old and would keep demanding a significant sum, although the circumstances have changed in the past few months.
For starters, they will have a midfield problem heading into the new year, with Sarr and Bissouma expected to join their national sides for the AFCON. In addition, they have already lost Rodrigo Bentancur to another injury that will see him miss a few months of action.
Hence, while Hojbjerg remains keen to take up a new challenge away from Spurs, Postecoglou might block any transfer and keep him on board. Such a move will not play in the club’s favour, as they might lose further valuations off the midfielder’s price tag.
The 28-year-old will have a year left on his deal next summer but already has plenty of suitors ahead of January. Fulham are one of the teams interested, but Juventus and Atletico Madrid have maintained their interest since the summer. Reports stated that Hojbjerg had agreed terms with Juventus and Atletico in November, which indicates the 28-year-old’s willingness to leave.
When the January window opens, the decision will come on Spurs’ shoulders as they must make the right call. With the perceived midfield shortage next year, they might look to keep Hojbjerg, but if they manage to sign a new midfielder, the Danish star might have the chance to depart.
