Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly opened talks with the representatives of in-demand Club America centre-back Sebastian Caceres, who could be available for as little as €10 million in January.

According to Italian outlet TuttoSport, Tottenham are among a host of European clubs that have held talks with the representatives of 24-year-old Club America defender Sebastian Caceres and have been tipped to sign him for a bargain fee in January.

Spurs got off to a fantastic start to the season, but knocks to James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, and others have stunted their progress lately. They ended a five-match winless run in emphatic fashion by pummeling Newcastle 4-1 in North London last weekend. However, they remain Champions League outsiders, having slid down to fifth place in the table following an inconsistent run of results.

Now, the Lilywhites’ boss, Ange Postecoglou, is looking to improve his squad in January, and it’s thought that signing a new centre-back is one of his priorities.

Spurs’ backline has been left in a precarious situation in recent times, with starter Van de Ven out for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury, Ben Davies playing out of position at centre-back, and Cristian Romero always on the edge of a red-card suspension.

Eric Dier has also been heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham for some time, so Postecoglou would likely have to replace him in January even without his current injury problems.

A number of other defenders have been eyed up by the club over the past few months, including Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Galatasaray’s Victor Nelsson. Now, reports suggest that Caceres could be a bargain solution to Spurs’ lack of defensive options.

Caceres, who currently plays for Liga MX outfit Club America, has racked up 116 appearances in all competitions since signing for them in 2020, scoring three goals in the process. His good performances have also earned him a regular spot in the Uruguay national team under Marcelo Bielsa, so there is certainly no doubting his quality.

The report claims that America would be willing to sell the 24-year-old centre-back for a bargain fee of €10 million in the upcoming January transfer window. Caceres has just one year remaining on his contract with the Mexican club and has no plans to renew his contract, and it’s thought he is keen on a move to mainstream Europe for a new adventure.

If they are to sign Caceres, Spurs may have to get their act together swiftly given that Serie A side Torino have already made an opening offer in the region of €7 million to lure the player to Italy in the winter transfer market.
