Tottenham are looking at 24-year-old Uruguayan defender Sebastian Caceres as a potential defensive option ahead of the January window.

Football Insider insisted Tottenham are interested in Sebvastioan Caceres ahead of the January window. The Club America defender has come to the fore for his performances for Uruguay in recent games, with Spurs keen to explore the idea of adding the 24-year-old South American defender to their backline.

Tottenham are having a fantastic start to their Premier League season, as they could go top of the league with a win over Fulham. Such a result would let them have an unchallenged two-point advantage at the summit following Arsenal’s draw with Chelsea.

There are far-fetched questions about whether the Spurs have the calibre to go all the way to challenge for the title. With 8-9 games on board, they have looked solid, but in hindsight, they need more squad depth in several areas, especially in central defence.

Summer arrival Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have started the season well and seem like they are Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice pairing. Beyond them, the Australian manager only has a few options to call upon while they are ready to sell Eric Dier in January, who appears to be their only other central defensive option.

Hence, Postecoglou will inform Daniel Levy to prioritise signing a new centre-back, while some reports insisted he wanted Edmond Tapsoba. The Bayer Leverkusen star is too important for Xabi Alonso and the club’s quest at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Galatasaray’s Victor Nelsson remains an option, with the player also open to the move. As things stand, Tottenham’s preferred targets are unclear, as they might explore a few more names before the January window opens.

Uruguayan centre-back Sebastian Caceres emerged on their shortlist after impressing under Marcelo Bielsa with the national team. The 24-year-old South American defender currently plays for Mexican side Club America, where he has a contract until 2024.

Financially, he could become a solid option, but he may lack the calibre to play for a top continental team like Tottenham. However, going by his performances for Uruguay, he may have the character to come in and become a quick learner of new methods.

The report does not indicate whether Tottenham are planning on making an offer but merely states they are keeping tabs on the 24-year-old. For Postecoglou, such a player could prove valuable in the future. In the current state, Caceres could add some much-needed depth to their backline.
