Real Madrid might target 23-year-old Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, a target for Chelsea, to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Giorgi Mamardashvili is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The 23-year-old is also a target for Premier League heavyweights Chelsea. Interestingly, the Merengues want the Valencia goalkeeper as a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga, currently on loan from Chelsea.
Giorgi Mamardashvili: A Rising Star in La Liga
Giorgi Mamardashvili has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in La Liga since joining Valencia from Dinamo Tbilisi. Los Che initially signed the Georgian international on loan in July 2021 before completing a permanent deal in January 2022. Since then, he has become a mainstay between the sticks for the Spanish club.
The 23-year-old has turned out 79 times thus far for Valencia, keeping 23 clean sheets. Meanwhile, Mamardashvili is a regular for Georgia, making 14 appearances for his national team. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs, including Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Chelsea or Real Madrid: Where Will Mamardashvili Land?
Chelsea’s interest in the Valencia goalkeeper stems from the inconsistencies of Robert Sanchez. The Spanish goalkeeper has not stamped his authority since joining the West London club from Brighton & Hove Albion. In addition, Kepa Arrizabalaga does not have a future at Chelsea, who will look to cash in on him next year once he returns from his loan spell at Real Madrid.
Speaking of Real Madrid, the Merengues are not sure if they will secure Kepa’s services on a permanent deal next year. So, they are scouring the market for goalkeepers heading into the 2024 summer transfer window. Several shot-stoppers have thus emerged on Real Madrid’s radar.
The report mentions Matheus and Randall Rodriguez as targets, with Giorgi Mamardashvili also featuring on their wishlist. But Los Blancos will face stiff competition from Chelsea and many other Premier League bigwigs for the 23-year-old Georgian international.
It will be interesting to see if Real Madrid can complete a permanent deal for Kepa Arrizabalaga or launch the offensive for Mamardashvili. But regular game time will come at a premium at the Santiago Bernabeu, meaning a move to the Premier League might be more attractive.
