Marc Guehi open to Chelsea return; January move improbable

Marc Guehi is reportedly open to re-joining Chelsea, with many other clubs also keen on the defender, but a January move appears improbable.

According to 90 Min, Marc Guehi would appear open to re-joining Chelsea in the future, but other clubs are also looking at the defender. Any move away from Crystal Palace in January seems improbable, but the 23-year-old could make a big switch next summer.

Marc Guehi has made a telling impression since joining Crystal Palace, with the Eagles paying around £20 million to sign him from Chelsea. Having come through the Cobham academy, the 23-year-old made only two total appearances for the Blues, both coming in the 2019-20 EFL Cup campaign.

Since making his switch across London to Crystal Palace, Guehi immediately established himself as a starter, and so far, he has featured 96 times for the club. He is considered one of the brightest British talents and continues to grow in stature in the heart of the Eagles’ defence.

Naturally, Guehi has plenty of suitors lining up enquiries should he choose to leave Palace at any stage. Manchester United are keen and could plot a January move, but the Eagles are not about to sanction a move in the winter window.

Erik ten Hag actively wants a new defender in his ranks and has considered the 23-year-old Palace man among other targets. Tottenham are also keen on Guehi alongside Chelsea and Arsenal, as many more teams could join in the hunt for the former Blues academy star.

Spurs are eager to strengthen their backline, but they may not afford to sign someone of Guehi’s stature given the lack of funds at the north London side. They might show more significant interest in the summer, but then, the 23-year-old will have many other suitors as well.

However, Guehi remains open to re-joining Chelsea in the future, as the Blues could target re-signing their former academy star. The Blues will enter future markets with eyes on a new central defender to replace Thiago Silva in the long run.

They have a host of defenders right now, as signing a striker in January will take precedence over other positions. Yet, they will keep a firm eye on Guehi’s development, although the 23-year-old will cost a premium fee whenever he leaves Palace in the future. The Eagles are not even considering a January sale, as the defender remains a crucial figure and will help determine where they finish this season.

Moreover, Guehi will not want to jeopardise his place in the England squad ahead of the Euros. He remains the third or fourth choice in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order but has got regular game time in recent games owing to the absences of crucial stars at the back.

Hence, any move for Guehi must wait until the summer, as Chelsea will likely enquire about re-signing him. Manchester United and Tottenham could also join the chase, although the chances of Arsenal entering this hunt are a bit slim.
