Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly compete with Chelsea for the signature of 19-year-old US Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu.

According to a report by Danish outlet Tips Bladet, Patrick Dorgu is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants are in the market for a left-back heading into the 2024 summer transfer window. But they face stiff competition from local rival Chelsea for the 19-year-old US Lecce defender.

Who is Patrick Dorgu?

Patrick Dorgu has established himself as one of the best young defenders in Serie A since joining US Lecce. A graduate of the Nordsjaelland youth division, the Danish prospect joined Lecce last year. But he spent the 2022/23 season on loan at his former club, gaining precious first-team experience.

The game time at Nordsjaelland was hugely beneficial for Dorgu, who has grown in stature at US Lecce this season. While the 19-year-old is not an undisputed first-choice starter for the Serie A club, he has still featured in every game thus far this term, starting four times.

But despite making only four starts, Dorgu’s potential is clear. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs, especially in the Premier League. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are two of his prospective suitors, with the London duo looking to prise him away from Lecce.

Tottenham and Chelsea interested in Patrick Dorgu: London calling?

At Tottenham, Destiny Udogie has taken little time to establish a foothold, becoming the undisputed first-choice left-back under Ange Postecoglou. In addition, Ryan Sessegnon should be Udogie’s long-term understudy. So, it is unclear how Dorgu might fit into the scheme of things at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As for Chelsea, the Blues have three left-backs in the first-team squad. But Marc Cucurella and Ian Maatsen face an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. In addition, Ben Chilwell’s fitness issues in the last few years will necessitate the arrival of a new left-back. Dorgu is thus a viable target for Chelsea.

Apart from Chelsea and Tottenham, several other European bigwigs are keen on signing the 19-year-old from Lecce. So, the Serie A outfit might be able to charge a premium to sell the young left-back when the big-name clubs come calling.
