La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly contemplating a January move for veteran Spaniard Dani Parejo after Gavi’s injury.

According to a report by Gerard Romero on Jijantes FC, Dani Parejo is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for midfielders after Gavi picked up a long-term knee injury. The veteran Spaniard has thus emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.

Dani Parejo has been one of the most underrated midfielders in La Liga in the last decade and a half. The 34-year-old is a graduate of Real Madrid’s fabled La Fabrica division, but he rose to prominence after joining Valencia. Los Che signed him in 2011 from Getafe, and he was a mainstay in the middle of the park for the club.

Parejo also served Valencia as the club’s captain before departing from the Mestalla in 2020. The veteran Spaniard joined Villarreal after an emotional farewell from Valencia, and he has turned out over 150 times thus far for the Yellow Submarine while chipping in with ten goals and 28 assists.

Parejo’s exploits at Villarreal have not gone unnoticed, and despite his advancing years, he is an attractive target for prospective suitors. In addition, the Spanish international has entered the final year of his contract, adding to his allure. Such a situation has captured the attention of FC Barcelona.

Barcelona briefly considered signing Dani Parejo from Villarreal this past summer before a move failed to materialise. They eventually secured the services of Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan and wanted to sign a younger midfielder next summer. But plans have changed after Gavi sustained a long-term knee injury in the ongoing international break.

Gavi’s absence means Barcelona might need to invest in a midfielder in the January transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions have thus compiled a shortlist of three players, including Dani Parejo. In addition, Thiago Alcantara and Guido Rodriguez also feature on Barcelona’s radar.

So, a move in the January transfer window for a midfielder is seemingly on the cards. But it will be interesting to see if Villarreal will entertain offers for a prized possession like Parejo in the January transfer window.
