Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder, valued at €40 million by Atalanta, next year.

According to a report by Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Ederson is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are in the market for a midfielder heading into the January transfer window. Meanwhile, Atalanta will demand at least €40 million to part ways with the Brazilian midfielder.

Ederson has established himself as one of the most underrated midfielders in Serie A since arriving in Italy nearly two years ago. The 24-year-old spent his formative years in Brazil before graduating from the Desportivo Brasil Ltda youth division in 2017. He subsequently represented three other clubs in his homeland before moving to Italy by joining Salernitana.

The Brazilian midfielder only spent six months with Salernitana before joining Atalanta in July 2022. Since then, Ederson’s stock has risen considerably, as he has come leaps and bounds at the Gewiss Stadium. Meanwhile, the player has started the 2023/24 season well, chipping in with five goals and one assist in 16 appearances across all competitions.

Ederson’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many well-known clubs in Europe. One of his prospective suitors will be Newcastle United, with the Tyneside outfit keen on bolstering the midfield unit in the January transfer window. Meanwhile, Atalanta will demand at least €40 million to part ways with the player.

The Magpies have lost Sandro Tonali to a long-term ban that will keep him on the sidelines until the 2024/25 season begins. Tonali’s absence means Newcastle United will have to delve into the market for a midfielder in the January transfer window, considering they signed the Italian international to take the midfield department to the next level.

Several midfielders, including Kalvin Phillips, have thus emerged on Newcastle United’s radar. But Ederson is also a viable target for the Tyneside outfit heading into the January transfer window. Meanwhile, Newcastle United should be able to afford to pay €40 million to land the Brazilian midfielder.
