Chelsea, Liverpool dealt setback in Florian Wirtz pursuit

Chelsea and Liverpool have received a major setback in their pursuit of 20-year-old Real Madrid target Florian Wirtz.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Chelsea and Liverpool are both keen on having Florian Wirtz in their ranks. The English clubs have been keeping a close eye on the 20-year-old for a while now and would love to have him in their ranks. But, they might not be able to make a move for him in the upcoming transfer window.

Wirtz joined Bayer Leverkusen in the winter of 2020. He started off with their Under-19s and in just six months time, he was promoted to their first team. The 20-year-old already has over 100 appearances for the first team and he has contributed towards a total of 68 goals.

The German international has gone from strength to strength since getting promoted. And, currently, he is amongst the best young talents in the world of football. While his contract with the German club runs until the summer of 2027, he is expected to join a bigger club in the near future.

Liverpool and Chelsea are both keen on having him in their ranks. They would love to sign him in the winter. But, that doesn’t seem possible for either of them because of the price tag Bayern Leverkusen has put on him. The German club want £87.2m (€100m) for the 20-year-old.

The Merseyside club have already spent millions in a midfield overhaul in the summer and they might not be able to afford the German international at this stage because of Financial Fair Play concerns.

Meanwhile, the Blues have already added Christopher Nkunku and Cole Palmer, two players who can feature as a number 10. And, they can’t really go all out for another attacking midfielder in the winter. They need to sign a striker and a defender on a priority basis in the winter.

While the price tag has come as a huge blow for both Chelsea and Liverpool as they will have to wait until the summer, Real Madrid could still make a move for him in the near future. The Los Blancos are always interested in the best young talents in the world and the 20-year-old has been on their radar for some time now.
