Newcastle United are interested in signing 25-year-old Dutch defensive midfielder Teun Koopmeiners from Serie A club Atalanta.

According to a report by Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle United are keen on having Teun Koopmeiners in their ranks. The 25-year-old midfielder has been in impressive form in the ongoing season, and he is on the radar of quite a few clubs from across Europe. A bid in the region of €50-55 million might do the trick.

Koopmeiners came through the ranks at AZ Alkmaar. He made quite a name for himself while playing for the Dutch club and on the back of his impressive rise, Atalanta acquired his services in the summer of 2021.

The left-footed defensive midfielder has gone from strength to strength since making the move to the Serie A outfit. The Dutchman has featured in a total of 90 matches and has contributed towards 27 goals.

In the ongoing season, the 25-year-old has been involved in 12 matches and has also contributed towards five goals. While he is a defensive midfielder in nature, Koopmeiners has been used in more attacking roles in the ongoing season. He has been given the freedom to attack and the Dutch international has repaid the faith.

His versatility and impressive performances have attracted a lot of attention. And, the Serie A club will surely receive bids for his services in the winter. Even during the summer, there was a lot of interest in the 25-year-old.

Napoli were one of the clubs keen on having him in their ranks, and they even submitted a bid of €47 million. But, the bid was rejected by Atalanta as it came very late in the transfer window and they did not have enough time to secure a replacement.

Atalanta would love to keep the Dutch international in their ranks until the end of the year. But, if an offer of around €50-55 million came in, the Italian club might look to cash in on the former AZ Alkmaar midfielder.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are one of the clubs that could push for his services in the winter. The Magpies have suffered a huge blow as their marquee summer signing Sandro Tonali has been banned for ten months because of being involved in illegal betting.

As a result, they are now looking to sign a replacement in January to ensure they have enough depth to fulfil their objectives. The Magpies feel Koopmeiners could be an ideal replacement. He has all the qualities needed to fill the void left by Tonali.

But, Newcastle cannot really go big to sign him in the winter because of Financial Fair Play issues. As a result, they might look to sign him on an initial loan deal with an option to buy. However, the final decision is in the hands of Atalanta.
