La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, a target for Real Madrid.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Santiago Gimenez is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Feyenoord striker is one of the most highly sought-after players in the transfer market. Meanwhile, the Blaugrana will face stiff competition from bitter rival Real Madrid in the race to sign the Mexican international.
Santiago Gimenez has established himself as one of the best young attackers in Europe since joining Feyenoord from Cruz Azul last year. The 22-year-old took no time to establish a foothold in the first-team squad at the Dutch club. And he was instrumental in De Club aan de Maas winning the Eredivisie title in the 2022/23 season.
The Mexican international has continued from where he left off last season, amassing 15 goals and three assists in 12 appearances across all competitions. Gimenez’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs in Europe. Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of his prospective suitors.
Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich last year, with the Polish international already making his mark for the club. But he is well into his thirties and approaching the end of his glittering career. So, it behoves Barcelona to invest in a young striker, with recent reports linking them with Youssoufa Moukoko, Julian Alvarez, and others.
But Gimenez is also a viable target, considering his exploits for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie and the UEFA Champions League. While Vitor Roque should be a long-term solution for Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez believes in having multiple options for every position. But the Blaugrana will face stiff competition from Real Madrid for the Mexican international.
Recent reports have suggested that the Merengues are one of the favourites to secure Gimenez’s services. And after choosing not to sign a long-term successor to Karim Benzema this past summer, the 22-year-old is a top target.
