Chelsea might need to fork out €52 million to re-sign AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham.

Chelsea are interested in re-signing former Cobham favourite Tammy Abraham, who left the club for Italian giants AS Roma in the summer of 2021.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a sensational debut season in Serie A but was not able to replicate the same numbers in 2022/23. Also struggling with injuries, he has fallen down the pecking order at Stadio Olimpico.

Jose Mourinho has a new chief goalscorer in Romelu Lukaku. The Chelsea loanee appears at home in Italy and is thriving under the Portuguese tactician. With Andrea Belotti also at the club, Roma are not lacking options upfront.

The same cannot be said of Chelsea, who lack a prolific goalscorer. Nicolas Jackson is far from prolific while Armando Broja continues to struggle with injuries. With Lukaku’s future lying away from West London, it is a certainty that the Blues need a new striker.

Of late, there has been talk of a deal that will see Abraham involved in a deal for Lukaku. While Abraham is far from a backup player at Roma, he can be considered expendable should Lukaku’s transfer be made permanent.

According to Calciomercato, Roma value the English international at €52 million. It is a number that could potentially be brought down if both strikers are part of an exchange deal. Still just 26, the Roma man is in the prime of his career. More so, he is also familiar with the Blues and will not need time to settle in.

However, it remains to be seen if Chelsea are keen to bring their former star back. After all, it was under the previous ownership that he was considered expendable. Whether Todd Boehly and Mauricio Pochettino consider him to be the answer to their woes remains to be seen.

Abraham is unlikely to be sidelined at Roma. But it is difficult to see him trump Lukaku to a starting spot if the Belgian is fit and available. It is not unusual for players to return to their former clubs and a lot should depend on whether bridges were burnt upon their parting.

Chelsea had included a buyback clause worth €80 million for Abraham, a tally that far exceeds what Roma value him at. Whether this is a factor that will influence decisions remains to be seen.
