Chelsea could prepare a new bid for Mike Maignan for next summer as AC Milan face a difficult time renewing his deal.
According to Tutto Mercato Web, Chelsea are keen to sign Mike Maignan next summer and could prepare a new bid for the 28-year-old French international. AC Milan have no intention of losing their key starter but face an uphill task of renewing his deal.
Mike Maignan proved an astute investment by AC Milan following the loss of Gianluigi Donnarumma to PSG. The 28-year-old French international has already lifted the Serie A title in his first season at San Siro and continues to grow in stature as one of Stefano Pioli’s most important players.
Clubs were lurking around the keeper during the summer window. AC Milan may have asked for a mammoth fee in exchange, which put many of his suitors off the chase. Still, some are keeping a close eye on his situation at the San Siro, as a door might open to get him out of the club.
Chelsea continues to keep close tabs on Maignan, as they were interested during the summer. The Blues were keen on overhauling their goalkeeping positions and managed to do so in different circumstances. They had contact with Milan for the 28-year-old French international. But the Rossoneri flatly refused what they had to offer.
Over at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea allowed Edouard Mendy to leave for Saudi Arabia while sanctioning a loan move for Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid. In turn, they signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton, and the Spaniard has since taken over the No.1 position.
While Sanchez still seems like an unconvincing option, Chelsea have not taken their eyes off other targets, including Maignan. AC Milan are keen to renew his deal but face an uphill task following the financial demands from the player’s camp.
As per the report, Maignan wants a salary of €7-8 million, which will put him on par with some of the best-paid stars in Serie A. Milan are willing to double his €3.2 million wages at best, as they face the challenge of extending his current deal valid till 2026. Milan are keen to offer him a contract until 2028.
Hence, Chelsea may sense an opening next summer and outmuscle Milan with their financial package for Maignan. The 28-year-old French international will certainly improve the Blues with his style of play. But the Premier League side are also in the chase.
PSG are also considering a return for Maignan, a player they sold to LOSC Lille a few years ago. Hence, Chelsea must have a fantastic package to tempt the Frenchman to join them, as the Ligue 1 champions will make life hard for the Blues in this particular pursuit.
