Aston Villa are still interested in Marcus Acuna ahead of the January window after failing to sign the 31-year-old World Cup winner during the summer.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Aston Villa retains an interest in Marcus Acuna, as Unai Emery could look to add the experienced fullback in January. The 31-year-old World Cup winner was close to joining the Premier League side in the summer but could get his move in the next window.

Unai Emery has gone about building a good team at Aston Villa using the resources afforded to him wisely. Some additions have made the side better since the season began, and there’s plenty of room for improvement with further additions.

Emery was looking at a new left-back during the window, potentially to replace Lucas Digne or even to replace Ashley Young’s experience in the team. Aston Villa explored a few options, with the manager narrowing down on Marcus Acuna from Sevilla.

Acuna was open to joining the Birmingham side and even agreed on personal terms, as per multiple reports. However, there were complications in concluding the deal, including Sevilla’s initial reluctance to let him go.

The Spanish side rejected multiple offers from Villa, which put the move in jeopardy. When things looked possible to conduct further negotiations, Acuna suffered an injury which may have put an end to any hope for the 31-year-old World Cup winner to move out of Sevilla.

Aston Villa weren’t alone in the chase, with West Ham also briefly looking at Acuna to add to their squad. With the January window approaching fast, Emery could rekindle another move for the experienced fullback in the winter months.

Adding quality players with enough experience seems vital for the Basque manager. Sevilla could open their doors and may consider offers for the 31-year-old World Cup winner, and Villa might come into the table once more.

With the long season ahead of the Birmingham giants, signing the fullback would make sense in a lot of ways. He also has a pedigree in European competitions, which would also benefit Villa in the Conference League. Whether they are successful this time with the Argentine remains the question, but a move to the Premier League will tempt the experienced star.
