Marc Cucurella has held talks with Mauricio Pochettino to seek clarifications on his future as an exit from Chelsea looks likely.
According to Daily Mirror, Marc Cucurella faces an uncertain future at Chelsea after holding showdown talks with Mauricio Pochettino about his immediate future. The £56 million flop looks exiled from the Argentine’s plans and could leave the club.
It has been a testing period for Marc Cucurella since making his high-profile £56 million move to Chelsea from Brighton. The Blues fought hard to acquire the 25-year-old in light of Manchester City’s interest. But many believe they overpaid for a player after only one top-flight season in the Premier League.
Cucurella, along with his Chelsea teammates, had a disastrous season where they finished 12th in the Premier League. In this campaign, the Spaniard has not played a single Premier League minute under Mauricio Pochettino but did feature in their EFL Cup opener against AFC Wimbledon.
That match could have caused complications in his proposed move away from the club during the summer window. Manchester United were at an advanced stage to sign the left-sided defender on loan. Still, EFL rules would have prevented the £56 million Chelsea flop from playing in that particular competition for another club.
The main reason why the deal collapsed points towards Manchester United’s desire to include a break clause in the loan contract, something Chelsea did not approve. Since the move broke down, reports suggested Cucurella could face an exile from Chelsea as Pochettino has lost faith in selecting him.
While that has remained true, Pochettino has preferred Levi Colwill at left-back, even ahead of Ben Chilwell at times. Chelsea also have Ian Maatsen as another option to fill in, meaning Cucurella does not feature in the Argentine’s plans.
Cucurella reportedly held showdown talks with Pochettino to address the uncertainty surrounding his future. He also has interest from Real Madrid, as per a few reports, and might consider making a return to La Liga if the conditions are right.
However, at Chelsea, Pochettino might continue to look away from Cucurella. And with that, a January exit might feel necessary for the £56 million flop. He still has the talent, and only he could not handle the immense pressure at Stamford Bridge in what also was a disastrous season in at least two decades.
