Barcelona will reportedly look to sign 17-year-old French defensive prodigy Leny Yoro if Andreas Christensen leaves.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Leny Yoro is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a centre-back for the contingency of Andreas Christensen leaving the club. And they have set their sights on the 17-year-old Lille defensive prodigy.

Leny Yoro is a native of Saint-Maurice in France and has spent his formative years thus far in his homeland. The French wonderkid began his youth career at UJA Alfortville before spending five years at Villeneuve d’Ascq Metropole. But he has risen to prominence since joining LOSC Lille in 2017.

The 17-year-old defensive prodigy has risen through the ranks at the Ligue 1 club. And he made his first-team debut as a 16-year-old in May 2022, becoming their second-youngest player. Yoro gradually grew in stature last season and has become a regular in the early days of the new campaign.

The youngster has already turned out six times thus far for Lille this season, finding the back of the net twice. Meanwhile, Yoro’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona, setting their sights on him.

The report claims that the reigning La Liga champions are in a spot of bother over the long-term future of Andreas Christensen. Fichajes suggests the Danish international is a target for Premier League clubs. And recent updates have heavily linked the Barcelona defender with Manchester United and Liverpool.

In addition, Christensen might not be the undisputed first-choice centre-back this season. With Joao Cancelo making the right-back berth his own, the former Chelsea defender has to compete with Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo for a spot at the heart of the defence. So, a move away from Barcelona might serve him well. Yoro is thus a viable target for the Blaugrana.

Barcelona can give him time to rise in stature before becoming a regular, considering they have Inigo Martinez and Marcos Alonso in the squad. But Christensen’s departure might not see the light of day, despite the claims by Fichajes. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if Barcelona’s interest in Yoro escalates.
