Chelsea and Manchester United could explore a move for Jose Maria Gimenez next summer as Atletico Madrid could sell the 28-year-old South American star.
According to Fichajes, Jose Maria Gimenez could gather the attention of Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United next summer. The 28-year-old South American star will enter the final year of his deal at Atletico Madrid, with the Spanish giants reportedly open to offers.
Some reports during the summer window pointed at Atletico Madrid opening the door to sell Jose Maria Gimenez. The 28-year-old South American star has been a long-serving member of Diego Simeone’s side, but in recent seasons, injuries have hampered his progress.
Now, that fact may come true as Atletico could ponder considering offers for the 28-year-old South American star if something reasonable comes in. The Uruguayan will enter the final year of his deal at the club, and they could choose to cash in.
Despite their stance, Atletico did not get any favourable interest in the defender. Manchester United are one of the clubs reportedly keen to explore a move alongside Chelsea. Both clubs have abysmally started the season, especially the Red Devils, who have already suffered three defeats in five games.
It’s their worst start ever to a Premier League season, and Erik Ten Hag may reflect upon the options he has at the back. There have been some injuries to Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane, with both players key to the Dutchman’s plans. Irrespective of their presence, many have called for a new addition at the back, something the club should have preferred during the summer.
They remain interested in a few names, including Portuguese star Antonio Silva, but he’s relatively young for their liking. Instead, Ten Hag might look for an established central defender, with Gimenez fitting the profile of a player who could slot into the starting team immediately.
A move for the currently out-of-form 28-year-old South American star may suit their case, as Ten Hag would hope the Uruguayan revives his career here. Meanwhile, Chelsea are also keen on Gimenez, with the Blues a long-term admirer of the centre-back.
The only concern is that Chelsea already have many defenders in their squad, including Trevoh Chalobah, who they could still sell. If they manage that, then Gimenez could come in to replace the English centre-back, as they already have Axel Disasi and Thiago Silva in the position.
They are also interested in Goncalo Inacio, but the Portuguese is a left-footed defender, and Chelsea already have two of those in their squad. Hence, Mauricio Pochettino might look at Gimenez to come in and become a part of his relatively young backline.
