Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie from Bundesliga club Bayer leverkusen.

A report from Marca 90 via LFC Transfer Room claims that Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign Piero Hincapie from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. The Ecuadorian international is likely to cost around £48 million.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months. But a transfer did not materialise during the summer window, with the Reds among those missing out. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can get the deal across the line in the coming months.

It is no secret that Liverpool need to bring in an upgrade on Joel Matip. Hincapie would be a quality long-term investment, and he has the potential to develop into a top-class Premier League defender.

The £48 million fee could look like a bargain in the long run if he manages to hit the ground running in the Premier League and fulfil his potential. Players like Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk have previously justified their transfer fees with their impact, and Hincapie certainly has the pedigree to do just that.

The opportunity to play for a club like Liverpool was always going to be an attractive proposition for the young defender, and he was likely to be tempted if there is a concrete proposal on the table.

The defender is represented by the same agent who handled Moises Caicedo’s move to Chelsea. The Reds wanted to sign the former Brighton midfielder as well. It will be interesting to see if the failure to sign Caicedo affects their relationship with the agent.

Hincapie is a prodigious talent who is rated highly in the Bundesliga, and he is destined to play for a top club in the near future. Liverpool must look to secure his services before the interest in him intensifies. The 21-year-old can operate as a central defender as well as a full-back. His versatility will be an added bonus for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
