Barcelona set to join Real Madrid in Erling Haaland chase

Barcelona will reportedly target Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, a target for Real Madrid, to replace Robert Lewandowski.

According to a report by 90min, Erling Haaland is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The 23-year-old Manchester City striker is also a target for Real Madrid. Meanwhile, his contract contains clauses, the first of which, worth around £150 million, will become active in 2025, with the values dropping every year.

Erling Haaland has established himself as one of the best players in the world in the last few years. The Norwegian international spent most of his formative years in his homeland before rising to prominence at Red Bull Salzburg. His stock then skyrocketed during his 30-month stint with Borussia Dortmund,

The 23-year-old’s spell at Borussia Dortmund ended last year, with Manchester City signing him for a bargain price of €60 million. And Haaland’s stint at the Etihad has already been a resounding success after guiding City to the treble in the 2022/23 season. The player has also been in fine form at the start of the new campaign.

The goal-hungry striker, who won the European Golden Shoe last season, has already amassed six goals and one assist in four Premier League appearances. But Manchester City will be concerned about Haaland’s future, with several high-profile clubs keen on signing him. Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of his prospective suitors.

Real Madrid will prioritise signing Kylian Mbappe in a Bosman move next summer. But Haaland’s name is next on Los Blancos’ wishlist, and he is Mbappe’s alternative. With Real Madrid yet to replace Karim Benzema, the Manchester City striker is a viable target.

But the Merengues face stiff competition from Barcelona. And the Catalan giants are positioning themselves to contend for Haaland’s signature, possibly in 2025. That is when a clause in his contract, worth £150 million, becomes active. And the value of his release clause will keep on reducing every year.

It will be surprising if Barcelona can afford to pay even £150 million to secure Haaland’s services. So, Real Madrid should still be in the pole position, with Barcelona hoping to compete with Los Blancos.
