Manchester United had a busy 2023 summer transfer window, making several crucial signings while parting ways with deadwood. Bolstering the midfield unit was one of Erik ten Hag’s priorities this past summer. And Manchester United addressed the issue by signing Sofyan Amrabat on the deadline day.

But the Moroccan international has joined Manchester United on a loan deal, and his permanent signing is not certain. In addition, Scott McTominay faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford, with Fulham among his prospective suitors. So, Manchester United might have to sign a midfielder in 2024.

Gomes is thus a viable target, with his ability to play as a holding midfielder also making him a potential Casemiro successor. But Wolverhampton Wanderers will likely demand a premium, considering their conduct during negotiations for Ruben Neves in the last few years. And it will be interesting to see if the 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder arrives at Old Trafford in 2024.
