Barcelona will reportedly take a closer look at 18-year-old Belgian midfield sensation Arthur Vermeeren in the clashes with Royal Antwerp.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Arthur Vermeeren is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants have had their sights on the 18-year-old midfield sensation since Jordi Cruyff’s days at the club. And they will scout the Royal Antwerp prospect during their UEFA Champions League group-stage meetings.
Arthur Vermeeren is one of the brightest young prospects in his homeland. The Belgian whizkid began his youth career at Lierse SK before spending a few years at KV Mechelen. But his stock has soared since joining Royal Antwerp half a decade ago. And after rising through the ranks, he made his first-team debut at the onset of the 2022/23 season.
Since then, the 18-year-old midfield sensation has come leaps and bounds, becoming a regular feature. He has started the 2023/24 campaign well, turning out eight times while chipping in with one assist. Meanwhile, Vermeeren’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several clubs, including Barcelona.
Vermeeren has been on Barcelona’s radar for several months, with the Blaugrana previously considering a summer move for him. But a deal did not materialise, with Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan bolstering Barcelona’s midfield unit instead. However, the club’s interest in the young prospect has not waned.
Joan Laporta and Xavi Hernandez are keen on recruiting a young midfielder who can be a long-term midfield solution alongside Pedri and Gavi. Several candidates, including Alvaro Montoro, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar. And Arthur Vermeeren is also a viable target for the Blaugrana.
The 18-year-old Belgian midfield sensation is a versatile player who can reprise different roles in the middle of the park. And Barcelona will run the rule over the Royal Antwerp prospect in the two upcoming UEFA Champions League meetings in the group stage.
