The Blues were bracing for a bid from their West London rivals to prise the 23-year-old away. But Spurs’ inability to shift Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg stalled any potential deal for the England star.
Conor Gallagher was a subject of speculation on deadline day as there were rumblings about a possible move away from Chelsea. The West London club have strengthened their midfield sufficiently, which gave them room to conduct a sale.
Moreover, the 23-year-old Chelsea star being a homegrown product would have helped them show a massive profit on their books had he left the club. Many clubs, including West Ham, had tried to lure Gallagher during the summer window. But the English midfielder decided to stay and fight for his place.
The arrivals of Moises Caicedo and Rome Lavia may have crept into his mind, which could restrict his role under Mauricio Pochettino in the coming period. Tottenham were reportedly willing to make a bid on deadline day, and that story picked up momentum as we headed towards the closing period.

Chelsea’s stance in all these remained unclear, as reports suggested Spurs were willing to bid £40-50 million for the midfielder. More stories told that Spurs had lodged a £40 million offer to test Chelsea’s resolve and bring the midfielder to north London.
The Daily Mail then reported that Gallagher got priced out of a move due to Chelsea’s £48 million asking price. Tottenham may not have envisaged going that high for the player about to lose his place at Stamford Bridge.
