Chelsea are ready to fork out a handsome amount to land Marcus Edwards this summer by triggering his release clause.

According to Foot Mercato, Premier League side Chelsea are interested in making a late move for Sporting CP star Marcus Edwards in the final days of the summer transfer window. And they are ready to trigger his €60 million release clause.

The 24-year-old came through the ranks at Tottenham before moving to Portuguese side Vitoria De Guimaraes in 2019. Dubbed the “mini Messi”, he eventually earned himself a move to Iberian giants Sporting CP in 2022 and has since taken his game to the next level.

A star at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Edwards has made 68 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and assisting 17 more. A difficult player to keep quiet, the winger could have added more goals to his tally had he been clinical in front of goal.

Chelsea are in the market for another attacker and have been linked with a move for Bradley Barcola, Raphinha and Emile Smith Rowe. Edwards is a new name on the list and could prove to be the better developed of the players in Chelsea’s sights.

A right winger, Edwards can also do a job anywhere along the frontline. A versatile player, the 24-year-old is a solid dribbler capable of picking out passes. This should make him a brilliant asset in Pochettino’s system at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea boss is aware of Edwards’s potential having seen him develop at Tottenham. Surely, the Argentine tactician can now get the best out of Edwards in Blue. Nicknamed the “mini Messi”, his potential is clear for all to see and can be developed under the right managaer.

Edwards’s contract at Sporting CP runs until 2026, but the Portuguese giants are yet to offer him an extension. The Liga Portugal giants are open to selling the Englishman should any team match his €60 million release clause. The onus is now on the Blues to match the clause and make Sporting CP an offer they cannot refuse.

With just hours to go before the summer transfer window slams shut, Todd Boehly and co. will need to make it quick. Signing Edwards will significantly strengthen Chelsea’s attack and also provide Noni Madueke with competition on the right flank.
