Manchester United recently approached Barcelona to ask about a possible loan deal for former UEFA Champions League winner Marcos Alonso.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT,  Marcos Alonso is seemingly a top target for Manchester United. The Red Devils want to sign a left-back before the summer transfer window shuts down. And they have approached Barcelona over the prospect of a loan deal for the 32-year-old defender.

Marcos Alonso has been a handy performer for Barcelona since joining them from Chelsea last summer. The Spanish international enjoyed a fruitful six-year stint with the West London club, winning the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles. But after falling in the pecking order, he was keen on departing from Stamford Bridge to resurrect his career. And Barcelona signed him for free.

The move has worked well for Barcelona, even though the 32-year-old did not feature prominently for them. But his ability to play as a centre-back and a left-back came in handy for Barcelona. Meanwhile, Alonso has made only one appearance this season as the Blaugrana did not register him in La Liga until last week.

Recent reports have claimed that Alonso’s Barcelona future is uncertain. The Catalan giants are open to cashing in on the former Champions League winner if they receive an attractive bid. And the veteran defender has recently emerged as a target for Premier League bigwigs Manchester United.

Intermediaries also offered the former Chelsea defender to Manchester United. Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ interest in the player stems from Luke Shaw picking up a long-term injury ten days ago. And with the English international on the sidelines for the next few months, Manchester United can do with a short-term left-back solution.

Tyrell Malacia is also on the sidelines due to a knee injury. So it behoves Manchester United to invest in an experienced left-back. And they have formally approached Barcelona over a possible loan move for Marcos Alonso. But it is unclear if Barcelona will entertain any loan bids for the 32-year-old.
