Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, with AS Roma close to signing him.

Chelsea want to get rid of Romelu Lukaku permanently. But it seems that another loan deal could be on the cards. Fabrizio Romano claims that AS Roma are now closing in on a deal to sign the 30-year-old striker and want to finalise the agreement imminently.

Apparently, AS Roma will pay €5 million to loan the player for the remainder of the 2023/24 season and no mandatory purchase clause has been included in the proposal. Lukaku was on loan at Inter Milan last season. He managed to score 14 goals across all competitions as the Italian giants reached the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Lukaku will look to play regularly this season as well, and he is unlikely to get that opportunity at Stamford Bridge. It makes sense for him to move on, and AS Roma could prove to be the ideal destination for him.

Jose Mourinho could get the best out of the Belgian international once again. The Portuguese manager prefers physically imposing centre-forwards who can hold up the play and lead the line. Lukaku seems tailor-made for the former Chelsea manager, and Roma would do well to secure his signature.

Having someone like him leading the line would also allow players like Paulo Dybala to play their natural game, drop deeper and link up with the midfielders. The Euro giants have shown tremendous improvement since the arrival of Mourinho, and he will be hoping to guide them to a major trophy now.

Someone like Lukaku could make a big difference in the final third, and he could help AS Roma challenge for the league title. The Belgian international has previously helped Inter Milan win the Scudetto when Antonio Conte was in charge of the club.

He has proven his quality across multiple clubs, and there is no doubt that he could be a world-class addition to the room attack if he can stay fit and get back to his best. The Belgian is a reliable goalscorer, and he has scored goals consistently at every club he has played for. He is well-settled in Serie A and could make an immediate impact at Roma if the transfer goes through.
