Chelsea were closing in on the signatures of 24-year-old Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams but the talks have broken down.

According to Ben Jacobs, talks between Chelsea and Tyler Adams over a potential transfer have broken down. The Blues triggered his relegation release clause and the player had completed his medical. But, post that the move collapsed.

The Blues have been busy throughout the transfer window. Unlike last season where they were focused on signing new players, Chelsea has been focused on trimming down their squad size and offloading players that are no longer a part of their plans moving forward.

While they have raised a significant amount by selling players, they have also lost a lot of quality, particularly in the centre of the park. They have sold the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and N’Golo Kante. These transfers have forced them to enter the market for new midfielders.

Their priority throughout the transfer window has been the signatures of Moises Caicedo. But, the last 24 hours have proved to be very difficult for Chelsea. They were constantly pushing for the Brighton midfielder but couldn’t agree a deal for his services.

Meanwhile, Liverpool entered the race last night in an attempt to hijack the deal and have reached an agreement with Brighton for a British record fee of £111 million. While the Merseyside club are very close to completing the signing, the Blues are still willing to try their luck and make one final offer.

While their focus was on Caicedo, they were slowly making moves to sign the Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams. They were aware of the £20m relegation release clause in his contract and decided to trigger it.

The player was keen on joining the Blues. He travelled to London to finalise personal terms, complete the final paperwork and sign as a new Chelsea player. However, post his medical with the Blues, negotiations collapsed and the deal is now off. The player is travelling back to his current club and is expected to continue with them.
