Manchester United icon David de Gea is reportedly closing in on joining Real Madrid, with talks between the two parties advancing.

According to a report by talkSPORT, David de Gea is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Merengues view the recently released Manchester United icon as a short-term replacement for the injured Thibaut Courtois. And the two parties are in advanced talks to seal a Bosman move in the coming days.

David de Gea is a graduate of the Atletico Madrid Academy. But he rose to prominence after joining Manchester United in July 2011. And while the Spaniard encountered teething problems at Old Trafford, he eventually became a pivotal figure for the Red Devils. In addition, he won the club’s Player of the Year award a record four times.

The 32-year-old spent over a decade at Manchester United, turning out nearly 500 times while keeping 190 clean sheets. But de Gea’s stint with Manchester United ended last month as he became a free agent upon the expiration of his contract. And he has not attracted many suitors in the last six weeks.

Recent reports have linked de Gea with Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian clubs have also shown interest in the Spanish international. But neither idea got the required traction, and he remains a free agent. However, his patience might have paid off, with Real Madrid reportedly considering signing him.

The Merengues have lost Thibaut Courtois for most of the upcoming campaign, if not the entire season. The Belgian international has picked up a long-term knee injury in training this week. So he will be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future, compelling Real Madrid to sign a goalkeeper this summer.

Several candidates have thus emerged on Real Madrid’s radar, with David de Gea also among the targets. And the report by talkSPORT has suggested that talks between the two parties have advanced. So the Manchester United icon might finally join Real Madrid eight years after his desired move collapsed.

But widespread reports have also linked Kepa Arrizabalaga and Yassine Bounou with Real Madrid. So de Gea needs to quickly seal an agreement with Real Madrid to seal his Bosman move. And it will be interesting to see if the Manchester United icon arrives at the Santiago Bernabeu in the coming days.
