Barcelona might look to re-sign maverick South American attacker Alexis Sanchez if Ousmane Dembele joins Paris Saint-Germain.

Reputed Spanish journalist Josep Capdevila has produced an intriguing yet bizarre claim about Barcelona. The update suggests Alexis Sanchez is the subject of interest from the Blaugrana. And he has claimed that the Catalan giants view the Chilean attacker as a possible replacement for Ousmane Dembele.

Ousmane Dembele’s future has become the major talking point in the market heading into August. With the final month of the summer transfer window kicking off, clubs will go into overdrive to finalise their signings. But Barcelona might have to make late changes to the first-team squad.

The Blaugrana had been advancing talks over a new deal with Ousmane Dembele. But with the French international entering the final year of his current contract, he was ripe for the taking. And Paris Saint-Germain duly pounced in the last few days, taking advantage of his situation at FC Barcelona.

The Ligue 1 champions hold a long-standing interest in the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner. And recent reports have claimed that Dembele will join PSG this summer after ending his talks with Barcelona. So the Catalan giants have to dip their toes into the market for a replacement. But that will be a tricky proposition.

Despite possibly recouping €50 million from Dembele’s sale, the status of which is unclear, Barcelona will have to pay €25 million to his agent Moussa Dembele. And amid their never-ending financial woes, the reigning La Liga champions do not have much funds to play with. In addition, they remain keen on bolstering the right-back berth.

So Barcelona might have to identify cost-effective options to replace Dembele. And Josep Capdevila has claimed that Alexis Sanchez is a candidate to fill the Frenchman’s void. Considering the maverick South American attacker is a free agent after leaving Marseille, he is a viable target.

But Sanchez has not been a game-changer since his Arsenal stint ended over half a decade ago. Nonetheless, after showing some promising signs at Inter Milan and Marseille, he can be a short-term solution for Barcelona. And coming in on a free transfer will make the Chilean attacker a low-risk acquisition. But the rumour still seems bizarre, and it will be interesting to see if a move sees the light of day.
