Manchester City in pole position to sign Rodrigo Riquelme

Manchester City are keen on having the 23-year-old Atlético Madrid winger Rodrigo Riquelme in their ranks.

According to AS via Sport Witness, Manchester City are interested in acquiring the services of Rodrigo Riquelme. The 23-year-old winger has made quite a name for himself of late and he is on the radar of multiple clubs from across Europe.

Riquelme has been a part of the Atletico Madrid setup since his childhood days. He has come up the ranks at the club and was promoted to their first team back in the summer of 2020. But, he couldn’t really get much game time at the club and was loaned out to Bournemouth later that year.

He has since been on multiple loan moves and is yet to get a decent run in their first team. The 23-year-old has only been involved in just two first-team matches.

In the 2022-23 season, he was on loan at Girona. The Spain youth international featured in a total of 35 matches and was on the pitch for over 2300 minutes. Riquelme contributed with five goals and four assists.

After an impressive loan spell, the 23-year-old is back at his parent club. And, his future is all set to be decided in the coming weeks. According to the report, he won’t be going out on yet another loan. Riquelme will either be sold in the summer or he will be a part of their first team for next season.

Meanwhile, he has been called up by Diego Simeone to their pre-season camp and is expected to get an extended run to showcase his potential. The Argentine manager is a big admirer of the player and wants him at his disposal next season. However, his future depends on his performance as well as the interest from elsewhere.

While there is a lot of interest in the 23-year-old’s services from Spain, the ones leading the race at this point in time are Manchester City. The English club have been keeping an eye on the Spain Under-21 star for a while now and want him in their ranks.

While there is no mention of an asking price, the report states that the Manchester-based club are ready to prise him away from Spain. While Riquelme is a popular name at City, it won’t be easy to sign him with Simeone keen on having him in his ranks.
