RB Leipzig are ahead of Manchester United in the hunt to sign Xavi Simons on loan after the Dutchman completes a surprise move back to PSG.

According to Loic Tanzi, RB Leipzig are well ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Xavi Simons on loan. The Red Devils had been keen on the 20-year-old during his time at PSV Eindhoven, but now they could target a loan move.

Xavi Simons was all over the news at the weekend following his surprise decision to re-sign for Paris Saint-Germain. Despite the heavy interest in his signature, plenty of reports suggest the 20-year-old is likely to move to Paris rather than the Premier League or elsewhere.

Arsenal were one of the clubs keen on Simons while at PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch outfit may have quoted them a huge asking price, which may have slowed down Mikel Arteta’s process of signing him. The Gunners could have come into the race later in this window after they managed to conduct sales.

Manchester United were also keen at some stage. But signing an attacking midfielder after Mason Mount was not a priority. A striker and central midfielder remain the main requirements at Old Trafford, which may have put someone like the 20-year-old on the back burner.

Manchester United may have been disappointed at knowing Simons’s sudden move to PSG. The French giants had a €6 million buy-back clause with PSV. While the player was not very open to the idea a few weeks ago, he has accepted this as the best way to improve his career.

Simons had a hand in 34 goals for PSV last season, which made him one of the most formidable names in the market. Meanwhile, after joining PSG, the attacking midfielder is all set to join another team on loan. RB Leipzig have been openly touted as the favourite destination for the player. But there are chances of Manchester United still entering the chase.

For now, RB Leipzig are well ahead of Manchester United or any other suitor to take Simons on loan. As per Fabrizio Romano, PSG are not keen to add a buy option in the contract before sending the 20-year-old away. The Bundesliga giants are keen on adding a creative attacker to the side after the sale of Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool.

Leipzig’s system seems conducive to a talent like Simons. He could thrive there and play some good football next season. He might have also excelled at Manchester United or even Arsenal, but he will become a sure starter with the Bundesliga side.
