Marseille could ponder making a move for beleaguered Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the French giants seek a replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
According to Fichajes, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang emerges as a target for Marseille. The French giants are keen on a new frontman and boosted by the prospect of the beleaguered Chelsea star wanting to stay put in Europe.
The Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saga continues to brew in the background, as Chelsea sees no solution to the striker’s future. After arriving last season at the behest of Thomas Tuchel, the Gabonese star saw the German manager depart in a short span.
Since Tuchel’s departure, the forward could not capture his prolific form for Chelsea, which resulted in three goals all season. He was subsequently omitted from the Champions League squad as it became clear the club wanted to get rid of his services.
A possible return to Barcelona came along, but the Catalans have since ruled out a move. He could have moved back to the club only if Chelsea were willing to terminate his contract and Aubeyang took a pay cut to join them.
With Barcelona out of the question, speculation compounded on a possible move to Saudi Arabia. Aubameyang participated in talks with some clubs but could not reach an agreement. A move to the middle east remains an option, but the striker reportedly wants to continue in Europe.
In what could become a favourable destination, Aubameyang has the attention of Marseille. He could ponder over a move back to France and join the Ligue 1 giants in the coming weeks. There’s no clarity on whether he would like such a move, but it’s always possible.
Chelsea will show eagerness to open talks and could even allow Marseille a chance to sign him on the cheap. There are doubts whether the Euro club could afford his wages, for which he will have to take a massive pay cut.
Incidentally, like when he joined Arsenal in 2018, Aubameyang could replace Alexis Sanchez in the Marseille squad. The Chilean departed once his contract expired, and the Gabonese could come in as a viable alternative.
Whether a move to Marseille materialises remains the question. Chelsea seems desperate to offload the striker as soon as possible. They are keen on culling their wage bill and would appear happy if they could get some money in exchange for Aubameyang.
