Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing €60 million-rated Spanish international goalkeeper Unai Simon from Athletic Club.

According to a report by Fichajes, Manchester City are among the clubs keen to sign Unai Simon in this window.. The Spanish international goalkeeper could find himself in the market if there is no resolution on his future. Athletic Club would like to keep him but might consider offers over €60 million.

A spot to become Spain’s undisputed No.1 has been up for grabs for many years. La Roja have failed to find an established keeper since the retirement of Iker Casillas, with those coming to replace the Real Madrid great often failing to make a permanent mark.

David de Gea was earmarked to become their undisputed No.1. But some disappointiing performances, particularly in the 2018 World Cup ensured he lost his spot. Former boss, Luis Enrique installed Unai Simon as his No.1, and the Athletic Club star has since maintained this position.

For now, the 26-year-old seems like the undisputed custodian for the Spanish national side, and might feature in the next Euros. His club future, however, has come into signifcant doubt with a contract exiring in 2025. The Basque side would like to keep him, but circumstances could force a sale.

Athletic Club are reportedly seeking at least €60 million for a sale, and there are quite a few high-profile clubs angling for Simon’s signature. The Spanish international has the attention of Italian clubs and most notably Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola, over the years has only brought in deputies for firm starter Ederson Moraes. The Brazilian is considered one of the best stoppers around for his ability in possession. He is exactly what the Catalan manager wanted from his goalkeeper, and there is no reason to move on from him.

Yet, some shaky performances over the last few seasons could force Guardiola to rethink the Brazilian’s future. In return, the manager would want someone with the profile that improves the position, and Simon fits in nicely. Manchester City will not hesitate paying the right fee for the player they feel would improve their squad.

However, signing a new goalkeeper is barely part of their priority plan. Guardiola wants a new defender, and Josko Gvardiol remains their primary target. They could also sign a new full-back to replace Joao Cancelo. But that position is not considered a key priority in this window so far.

Manchester City will hope to keep Bernardo Silva, and if he leaves then replacing him would take precedencce over every other need. As for Simon and the links with a move, it is all very unerdeveloped at this stage. Profile-wise he could become a target, but there is no imminent need to move away from Ederson.
