La Liga champions Barcelona have reportedly contacted 31-year-old Girona midfielder Oriol Romeu over a move this summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Oriol Romeu is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The 31-year-old has become a top target for the Blaugrana, with Marcelo Brozovic closing in on joining Al Nassr. And they have already contacted the Girona midfielder over a move in the summer transfer window.
Oriol Romeu spent his formative years with three clubs, passing through the youth divisions at CF Ulldecona and Espanyol before joining Barcelona in 2004. And he was one of the top performers in La Masia, albeit without getting his chance to impress for the first team. So he left Barcelona to pursue his career in England. And his stint with Southampton, in particular, was fulfilling.
The 31-year-old ended his spell with Southampton last summer to return to his homeland. And Romeu was a top performer for Girona this past season, turning 34 times while chipping in with two goals. And the experienced midfielder’s progress at the Catalan club has captured the attention of Barcelona.
The newly-crowned La Liga champions have bolstered their midfield by signing Ilkay Gundogan in a Bosman move. But the former Manchester City captain will reprise an offensive midfield role instead of replacing the now-departed Sergio Busquets. So Barcelona will have to enter the market for a holding midfielder.
Marcelo Brozovic has thus been the top target for Barcelona this summer. But the Croat is closing in on joining Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. That has forced Barcelona to realign the options to bolster the midfield department. And Oriol Romeu is one of the candidates to reinforce the Barcelona midfield.
Recent reports have also suggested that the Blaugrana might offer a part-exchange deal to sign the 31-year-old. And the Catalan giants have contacted the former Southampton midfielder over a possible move this summer. Meanwhile, Girona will be open to dealing with Barcelona by lowering the valuation from €10 million.
Dani Parejo was another midfield target for Barcelona. But the newly-crowned La Liga champions have ruled out a summer move for the Spaniard, with Romeu becoming the top target. And it will be interesting to see if a deal materialises after Barcelona’s decision to contact the 31-year-old.
