Tottenham have opened direct talks with Wolfsburg for defender Micky van de Ven, who also has the interest of Liverpool.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have opened talks for Micky van de Ven and are in direct contact with Wolfsburg. Spurs will make a verbal offer, and if it suits the Bundesliga side, a proper bid might get lodged for the 22-year-old Liverpool target.

Micky van de Ven has seen a tremendous rise in stature following a good season with Wolfsburg. The Bundesliga side are aware of the growing interest in the Dutch defender, and now the possibilities of a departure continue to grow.

Liverpool and Tottenham were competing for the Dutch defender, but Spurs appeared to have taken the lead in the chase. The north Londoners have recently shown interest in securing the 22-year-old and are advancing in their chase.

Liverpool are looking at several defenders in this window. Jurgen Klopp feels the team needs a new central defender to cover or compete with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. Moreover, Joel Matip and Joel Gomez might get sold for reasonable offers. Either way, the team needs some changes at the back.

While Liverpool have kept tabs on Van de Ven, Tottenham seems like the primary contender for the Dutchman. Spurs have now advanced in their pursuit and opened direct talks with Wolfsburg. The information comes from Fabrizio Romano, who claimed they would make a verbal offer for the 22-year-old.

Since Ange Postecoglu’s appointment, Tottenham have stepped up their chase for a new centre-back. Edmond Tapsoba was on their shortlist, and Spurs were inching closer to securing the Bayer Leverkusen man.

As per Romano, Van de Ven might become an alternative to Tapsoba, which reportedly has a higher price tag. While the 22-year-old’s price point remains unclear, he might cost considerably less than the Bayer Leverkusen star.

In the next phase, after submitting a verbal offer, Tottenham could lodge a firm bid and get the deal over the line. They are also looking at Roma’s Roger Ibanez, which might indicate Spurs’ intention to sign two centre-backs than just one.

Van de Ven, a towering presence at the back, will improve Spurs in many aspects. He could bring some defensive solidity for them and boost an area considered weak after last season’s performances. Tottenham will still have to agree a fee with Wolfsburg, as the price point could become clear in the coming days.
