Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the race to sign 22-year-old Dutch defender Micky van de Ven from Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

According to reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race to land VfL Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven in the ongoing summer transfer window.

A defender is on the agenda for the North Londoners as they look to rebuild under Ange Postecoglou. Having conceded 63 goals in the Premier League last season, the rearguard remains an Achilles heel for Tottenham. In fact, only five Premier League sides conceded more than Tottenham last season, three of whom got relegated.

Ange Postecoglou is known for his attractive style of football that makes use of intricate passing and a relentless attacking push. Van de Ven is blessed with incredible pace and would be a solid addition to the Tottenham roster.

At 22, the Dutchman is yet to hit his prime and could develop into a top-class defender for the upcoming decade. Capable of playing at both centre-back and left-back, Van de Ven is versatile enough to perform in Postecoglou’s system.

Van de Ven is a solid dribbler and is a modern-day footballer when it comes to displaying his technical prowess on the ball. He is also adept at blocking and is a capable ball carrier who can bring the ball out of the defence. This is in stark contrast to that of Cristian Romero who is largely a physical presence at the back.

Tottenham have already held talks with the Dutchman’s representatives and continue to monitor the situation. With Liverpool also in the fray, the North Londoners will need to act fast to land their man.

The Reds have an eye for a bargain and are also in the market for a central defender. Van de Ven has openly spoken of potentially making a summer switch and was also pictured at Anfield a few years ago. However, all this could count for nothing if Tottenham manage to sell him their project.

Van de Ven has the makings of a solid defender and will only get better with time. By acting fast, Tottenham could land themselves a bonafide star for the future on the cheap. With Edmond Tapsoba also on their radar, it remains to be seen who the Lilywhites go for as the summer progresses.
