Atletico Madrid in talks to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly negotiating a possible summer move for Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

According to a report by Tutto Mercato Web, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is the subject of interest from La Liga club Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros view the Tottenham Hotspur midfield general as a top target for the summer transfer window. And the two clubs are currently discussing a deal for the Danish international.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has had a weird trajectory in his professional career. The 27-year-old spent most of his formative years in his homeland before graduating from Bayern Munich’s youth division. But he managed only two dozen appearances for Bayern Munich before moving to England by joining Southampton.

The Danish midfielder’s stock rose considerably during his four-year stint with Southampton. And he also served the Saints as their captain before joining Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £15 million in August 2020. Since then, Hojbjerg’s status as a first-choice midfielder for Tottenham has remained unblemished.

The former Southampton captain has made nearly 150 appearances for the North London club. And he has also chipped in with ten goals and 16 assists in his outings for Tottenham. But Hojbjerg’s Tottenham future is uncertain, with recent reports suggesting a summer departure might be on the cards. And Atletico Madrid will look to land him in the coming weeks.

The Colchoneros are keen on returning to the summit of La Liga next season after a sub-par 2022/23 season. And Diego Simeone wants Atletico Madrid to bolster the midfield unit in the summer transfer window. Several candidates, including Sofyan Amrabat, have thus emerged on Los Rojiblancos’ radar.

But the report by Tutto Mercato Web claims Hojbjerg features prominently on Atletico Madrid’s wishlist. And they are negotiating a summer move for the Danish midfield general with Tottenham. But the North London club’s asking price is posing a problem for Atletico Madrid. And they are hoping to bring the valuation down during discussions.

Tottenham might succeed in recouping more than £15 million from Hojbjerg’s sale, as his contract runs out in two years. But it will be interesting to see if they can get Atletico Madrid to match their valuation of the 27-year-old.
