Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Lucas Paqueta and might offer €70 million to land the 25-year-old Brazilian international.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Lucas Paqueta is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. And the Magpies are ready to break their transfer record to land the Brazilian international. The Tyneside outfit will readily offer €70 million to secure the services of the West Ham United midfielder.
Lucas Paqueta spent his formative years in his homeland before graduating from the Flamengo Academy. And after a few years with the Brazilian club’s first team, he moved to Europe by joining AC Milan in January 2019. But the 25-year-old did not have a good time at San Siro and moved to Lyon in September 2020.
The Brazilian midfielder’s stint with Lyon was impressive, with his performances capturing the attention of several clubs across Europe. And West Ham United snapped Paqueta up last summer. While the Hammers struggled this past season, he managed five goals and seven assists in 43 appearances. And the player’s performances have alerted Newcastle United.
Newcastle United will delve into the market for at least one midfielder this summer. The Magpies have two options, to either sign a holding midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder. That is because Bruno Guimaraes can reprise both roles depending on the personnel in Eddie Howe’s squad.
If a holding midfielder joins Newcastle United, Bruno Guimaraes will have the license to move forward and express himself. But with most box-to-box midfielders readily available, the Brazilian international might continue to reprise a more defensive role. But he may reunite with his former Lyon teammate Lucas Paqueta this summer.
The two Brazilian internationals shared a fulfilling bond at the French club before Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle United. And the Magpies are ready to offer a record €70 million to secure Paqueta’s services. It is unclear how much West Ham will demand to part ways with the 25-year-old.

But a bid worth €70 million might be too attractive to turn down. Meanwhile, Newcastle United will soon sign Sandro Tonali in a deal worth €70 million. And it will be interesting to see if they are ready to enter the market for another midfielder. For now, a deal for Paqueta seems unlikely despite the claims from the Fichajes report.
