Newcastle United might launch the offensive to sign 20-year-old German striker Derry Scherhant from Hertha Berlin this summer.

According to a report by Daily Telegraph, Derry Scherhant is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The 20-year-old Hertha Berlin striker is the latest prodigious prospect to emerge on the Magpies’ radar. And the Tyneside club might look to sign the youngster in the summer transfer window.

Derry Scherhant struggled to find stability during his formative years, passing through the youth divisions of four clubs. This included a three-month spell at Berliner SC before joining Hertha Berlin. And the German whizkid graduated from the Hertha BSC Academy a couple of years ago.

Since then, the 20-year-old has come leaps and bounds and made his first-team debut for Hertha at the onset of the 2022/23 season. And while Die Alte Dame went down to 2. Bundesliga, Scherhant made his mark in the ten appearances he managed. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with Newcastle United among his prospective suitors.

At Newcastle United, Eddie Howe has two top-notch strikers at his disposal, with Alexander Isak arriving at St. James’ Park last summer. But Callum Wilson is on the wrong side of 30, with the English international having a history of fitness issues. So it behoves Newcastle United to sign a young striker at the onset of his professional career.

Derry Scherhant has thus emerged as a viable target for the Tyneside club heading into the summer transfer window. The 20-year-old fits Newcastle United’s ethos of investing in young prospects to set the stage for long-term success. Such an outlook has enabled the Magpies to invest in Yankuba Minteh, Garang Kuol, and Harrison Ashby, among others.

Meanwhile, they have also shown interest in other strikers, including Dusan Vlahovic. But investing in a long-term prospect like Scherhant will be more sensible for Newcastle United. However, the report does not mention whether the Magpies are lining up an offer for the German striker.

It will be interesting to see if the Tyneside giants present a bid to Hertha Berlin in the coming weeks. The opportunity to play in the Premier League is often attractive for youngsters. And Newcastle United can potentially haul him off on loan for a few years before he becomes the first-choice striker.
