Romelu Lukaku has his heart set on returning to Italy and is ready to quit Chelsea this summer, as the forward’s future remains uncertain.
According to Football Insider, Romelu Lukaku might consider quitting Chelsea in the summer. After ending his loan spell with Inter Milan, Mauricio Pochettino does not want the 30-year-old beleaguered star. However, a potential return to San Siro remains a subject of discussion.
Chelsea are making concrete plans for the transfer window as the board aims to provide Mauricio Pochettino with a stable squad. The Blues will not contest in any European competitions after finishing 12th in the league, which will compel them to trim down their group.
Chelsea also need to raise funds and cull their massive wage bill, which will see a few players leave. There’s already speculation around the futures of Mason Mount and Kai Havertz, with interest coming from Manchester United and Arsenal, respectively.
Then there is the subject of Romelu Lukaku, the £97.5 million striker, who returns with an uncertain future. The 30-year-old beleaguered Chelsea star does not have a future at the club, despite Mauricio Pochettino desperately needing a new striker ahead of the new campaign.
Lukaku recently travelled to Saudi Arabia to discuss a move to the Middle East but may have rejected a proposal. The Belgian reportedly wants a higher salary than on offer, while the Saudi Arabian clubs are unwilling to pay a hefty transfer fee in return.
Alternatively, he is keen to return to Italy, preferably with Inter Milan, where he is liked. Financially, buying Lukaku outright from Chelsea will prove difficult for the Nerrazurri owing to their internal issues, although Chelsea could propose a part exchange deal.
Chelsea are interested in Andre Onana and have already considered offering one of three players in exchange, including Lukaku. The two clubs are expected to discuss many subjects, as the Belgian could also become a subject.
There are question marks over how much of a loss Chelsea are willing to take against Lukaku. They might ideally involve him as part of a deal beneficial to all parties. For now, the Belgian prefers to return to Italy, although his future is far more complicated than it seems.
