Carlo Ancelotti reportedly wants Real Madrid to sign 30-year-old Italian defender Leonardo Spinazzola from AS Roma this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Carlo Ancelotti is an admirer of Leonardo Spinazzola. And with Real Madrid scouring the market for a left-back, the Italian tactician has asked Los Blancos to sign the 30-year-old AS Roma defender in the summer transfer window.

Leonardo Spinazzola spent his formative years with Siena before ending his youth career at Juventus. But the Italian international has been a journeyman for most of his career thus far, only finding stability since joining AS Roma from Juventus in July 2019. And he has come leaps and bounds in the last four years.

The 30-year-old has been arguably the best left-back in his homeland since joining AS Roma. And the experienced defender has enjoyed a solid 2022/23 season thus far, chipping in with two goals and six assists in 38 appearances. Spinazzola’s progress in Rome has not gone unnoticed either, with Carlo Ancelotti keen on bringing him to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid will head into the summer transfer window looking for a left-back. And widespread reports have claimed that Fran Garcia will likely rejoin Los Blancos ahead of the 2023/24 season. But Ancelotti will not be satisfied with just Garcia’s signature, especially with Ferland Mendy facing an uncertain future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Recent reports have claimed that top Premier League clubs are keen on signing the Frenchman. So Real Madrid will need two left-backs if Mendy leaves, bringing Spinazzola into the picture. And Carlo Ancelotti is pushing the Merengues to sign the 30-year-old Italian defender in the summer transfer window.

With Garcia’s best years ahead of him, Spinazzola can be a short-term left-back solution for Real Madrid. And the Italian defender’s presence in Los Blancos’ squad will also help Ancelotti ease Garcia into the thick of the action. Interestingly, the Spanish giants were close to signing the 30-year-old two years ago, only for a long-term injury to scupper a deal.
