Barcelona will prioritise a summer move for 28-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich as the ideal successor to Sergio Busquets.

According to a report by RAC1, Joshua Kimmich remains the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants view the 28-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder as their priority for the summer transfer window. He has overtaken Martin Zubimendi in the pecking order of targets to succeed Sergio Busquets.

Joshua Kimmich joined Bayern Munich from VfB Stuttgart nearly eight years ago. A promising right-back with aspirations of becoming a top-class midfielder, he has fulfilled his potential in the last few seasons. And the German international has been Philipp Lahm’s true heir for his club and country in doing so.

The 28-year-old is a pivotal figure for Germany and Bayern Munich. And he has turned out nearly 350 times thus far for Die Roten, chipping in with 40 goals and 94 assists. But recent reports have suggested that Kimmich’s long-term future is uncertain. And such a situation has captured the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona.

The Blaugrana will head into the summer transfer window searching for a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets. The Barcelona captain will depart from Spotify Camp Nou in the summer transfer window. And while the veteran midfielder has seen his performance levels wane in the last few years, his exit will leave a gaping hole in the Barcelona midfield.

Several midfielders have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar, with Martin Zubimendi being Xavi Hernandez’s priority. But the Blaugrana cannot afford to sign the Real Sociedad midfielder. And while Kimmich, whose market value is €80 million, should ideally be more expensive, he has become a top target for Barcelona.

The report by RAC1 claims that Kimmich is the priority target for Barcelona to replace Busquets. But it is unclear if the Catalan giants have the means to afford the 28-year-old midfielder’s asking price. A part-exchange deal might also be on the cards for the German international.

It will be interesting to see if Bayern Munich will be open to receiving a player in the deal to sell the 28-year-old to Barcelona. For now, the Catalan giants view the versatile midfielder as their top target for the summer transfer window.
