Manchester United will happily pay €56 million to sign Kim Min-jae, but Newcastle United will compete with them for the Napoli centre-back.

According to a report by Italian outlet Il Mattino, Manchester United will have no qualms about triggering the release clause to sign Kim Min-jae. They have already told Serie A giants Napoli that they will pay €56 million to sign the South Korean centre-back. Meanwhile, Kim is also a target for Newcastle United.

Kim Min-jae has taken no time to establish himself as one of the best centre-backs in Serie A. The 26-year-old was largely unheralded when he arrived at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium from Fenerbahce. But he has taken to Serie A football like fish to water, helping Napoli win the Scudetto.

The South Korean international has been the first-choice centre-back for Napoli this season. And he has turned out 43 times across all competitions, chipping in with two goals and two assists. Kim’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with Manchester United and Newcastle United keen on signing him.

Manchester United will head into the summer transfer window looking to sign a right-footed centre-back. That is because Harry Maguire faces an uncertain future, while Victor Lindelof might leave to secure regular game time. In addition, Raphael Varane has endured fitness issues during his stint with Manchester United.

Kim Min-jae has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, with the Red Devils offering him €8 million-a-year wages. And recent reports have claimed that the 26-year-old is closing in on joining Manchester United, with personal terms not an issue. But Manchester United will face stiff competition from Newcastle United for the player.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Kim Min-jae is also a target for Newcastle United. And with the Tyneside outfit ready to part ways with Jamaal Lascelles, the South Korean defender is an option worth considering. But with Manchester United ready to trigger Kim’s release clause of €56 million, Newcastle must be decisive with the next move.

The Magpies are in a healthy-enough position to shell out €56 million to sign Kim from Napoli. And the newly-crowned Serie A champions are helpless if a suitor triggers his release clause. So it will be interesting to see if Kim remains in Naples or joins Manchester United or Newcastle.
