Barcelona recently discussed a summer move for 28-year-old Portuguese international Joao Cancelo with Jorge Mendes.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Joao Cancelo is the subject of interest from Barcelona. And the Catalan giants have discussed a possible deal for the Portuguese international with Jorge Mendes. The full-back, whose market value is €60 million, will likely leave Manchester City in the summer transfer window.
Joao Cancelo has hit a stumbling block in his fledgling career after a few years of top-notch performances. The 28-year-old had some run-ins with Pep Guardiola after returning from the break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And Manchester City shipped him on loan to Bayern Munich in the January transfer window.
The Portuguese international has been in and out of the side in the last few months while chipping in with one goal and five assists in 18 appearances for Bayern Munich. And the Bavarian giants will unlikely sign him permanently in the summer transfer window. But Barcelona will aim to secure the services of the Manchester City full-back in the coming months.
Joan Laporta has already revealed that Barcelona will delve into the market for a right-back this summer. And Barcelona’s desperation for a top-class right-back stems from their inability to identify Dani Alves’s heir. That has forced Xavi Hernandez to use Jules Kounde, a centre-back, as a right-back this season. Joao Cancelo has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona.
Recent reports have even claimed that the 28-year-old Portuguese international is a priority target for Barcelona. But the never-ending financial issues might force Barcelona’s hand and stop them from pursuing Cancelo. And even though his market value has fallen to €60 million, he should be a pricey acquisition.
Nevertheless, the Catalan giants have initiated discussions with Cancelo’s agent. The report claims that Jorge Mendes was recently in Barcelona, and he spoke about a possible deal for the former Juventus defender. But the Blaugrana might not be in a position to sign the player.
The 28-year-old Portuguese international will likely leave Manchester City in the summer transfer window. But it will be interesting to see if Barcelona can somehow raise the funds to sign him. If not, Cancelo’s future will be uncertain, especially if he does not join Bayern Munich permanently.
