Xavi Hernandez and Barcelona are reportedly monitoring the situation of 26-year-old Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Dani Ceballos is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are keeping tabs on the situation of the Real Madrid midfielder. And the 26-year-old might leave Los Blancos as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

Dani Ceballos has been resurrecting his stuttering career this season under Carlo Ancelotti. The Spanish midfielder had struggled to stamp his authority under the tutelage of Zinedine Zidane. Meanwhile, his loan move to Arsenal produced mixed results. But since recovering from an ankle injury, he has had more opportunities to make his mark at Real Madrid.

While the 26-year-old is still not the first-choice midfielder, he has managed 40 appearances for Real Madrid this term. But the reigning La Liga champions are in a spot of bother over Ceballos’s long-term future. And with the player entering the final months of his Real Madrid contract, his situation has alerted Barcelona.

Barcelona will likely enter the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window. And while bolstering the midfield unit will not be Barcelona’s priority, Franck Kessie’s uncertain future will keep them on their toes. In addition, Sergio Busquets is approaching the end of his glittering career.

So it behoves Barcelona to scour the market for economical midfield solutions ahead of the summer transfer window. Several midfielders, including Denis Zakaria, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar. And Dani Ceballos is also a viable target, even though signing the Real Madrid midfielder will be controversial.

The Catalan giants are not the only rival club interested in the 26-year-old, with Atletico Madrid  also keen on signing him. But the Spaniard has already rejected an approach from Los Rojiblancos. And widespread reports have claimed that Ceballos wants to remain at Real Madrid beyond the summer transfer window.

So it will be interesting to see how the Spanish international responds if he receives an enquiry from Barcelona. But joining Barcelona might be a reasonable call if he does not extend his stay at Real Madrid. For now, Ceballos remains focused on remaining at Real Madrid for the foreseeable future.
